In order to test sounds and their non-linear relationship to one another it was necessary to create a virtual prototype that would function like the actual soundgrove.
In the diagram to the left, each 4-segment bar represents a pole in the soundgrove. Clicking on any segment triggers a specific MP3 file. As sounds are recorded or revised, they are loaded to an FTP site so the project team can test them out. Different groupings, durations and audio networking arrangements could be programmed into the prototype, allowing experimentation with the user interface (see next page).
FUNCTION: - Action (touch) = reaction (sound)
- Seven tone families; 12 tones per family
- Tone families are networked together
- Each tone has associated tones on 2 other poles
- Similar tones trigger one another in series
- Sound speads across the grove
